LOST 2008, STOLEN 2008 and FOUND 2008
So 2008 Starts...
A particularly scummy theft occurred over the May 30th to June 1st weekend.
FYI: This past fall, the Dune Preservation Society, a local group dedicated to protecting the sand dunes
installed wooden walkways across the dunes at Gilgo Beach to protect and stabilize the dunes.
They have made it easier to get to the beach and actually help build up the sand along the dune path.

Some low life ripped off a 10 foot section Be on the Lookout! If you see something suspicious, June 16th Update |
Sunday, JUNE 9th
Big Kevin with the loud jeep had his shorts stolen from his jeep while surfing.
Wallet, cell, cash, glasses etc. WATCH YOUR STUFF.
A Theft from 02 that keeps hurting...
My name is Max Manthos and I am 23 years old. Like many other Long Island surfers I have been surfing since childhood, and I call Gilgo my home break. I am writing you today because for a change I looked at something other than the cam shots on your website, the stolen section.
A sad day it certainly is when surfers steal from other surfers. My car has, fortunately, never been robbed while at the beach, but a surfboard has been stolen from my backyard.
When I was 16 years old, driving with my mother on a nice summer saturday morning, we passed by a garage sale in my hometown of Bay Shore. I made her stop, like I imagine many surfers do, in hopes that there might be a surfboard for sale. Well low and behold sitting on the ground off to the side lay a dirt and mud covered long-board. Upon inspection I discovered that this was no ordinary board, it was a Phoenix. And furthermore shaped by none other than Squeak. I immediately asked how much she wanted for it and with some bargaining I purchased the board for forty nine dollars and four quarters.
I took it home cleaned all the dirt off and marveled at my most awesome new board, and with a couple patch jobs and it was almost mint. It stood nine feet tall with one large blue center skeg. The board was cherry red and written in white the word phoenix going letter on top of letter down the entire back of the board. But the most interesting part about the board, and to which i attribute it's amazing wave catching abilities, was that it was shaped like a peanut. The nose and tail were significantly wider than the middle. And on the back there was a picture of Mr. Peanut.
Every time I went to the beach an older surfer would ask me where I got it, and I told everyone my story just as excitedly as the first. To which they all responded with stories of their own. The board was a vessel of two types you see. One, it was a wave catching machine, and two, it brought me together with all these great people who shared stories and insight. My surfers coming of age if you will.
I had the board for about two years when the nose hit the sand and cracked only slightly. I was so sad that my favorite board was out of commission. My birthday was about a week away when it disappeared from my backyard so my assumption, or maybe hope, was that my parents had taken it to get repaired. But when my birthday came and my surfboard was not to be seen I freaked, almost cried actually. I never saw it on any beach, or in any waters.
It's been several years since then, but your stolen section brings me a glimmer of hope. All I ask is for a post of my board on your site. It would mean worlds to me. And who knows maybe I'll get it back.
Board was stolen in Bayshore back in 2002.
If you have any information on this board, please email max at: max8manthos@aol.com

STOLEN History
Another Theft!! Don't leave your keys hidden by your car!!
Lowlifes are watching, this happened June 12th, 2007
Stupidly hid my car key where I've always put it, went surfing for about two hours
and when I got back to my car after the session the key was where I put it
but my car had been emptied by some scummy thieves.
They took my wallet with all my ID, CD case loaded with discs, 2 pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses,
3/2 Rip Curl wetsuit, DaKine 10' board bag, Gil Hibben hunting knife (a beauty), my prescription glasses
and other miscellaneous items. In other words, I got fucked big time.
I reported it to the cops but of course they said it was an unsolvable crime and
I have a $1000 deductible on my homeowners so I won't get much back.
Warn your surfing buddies to be careful, keep their eyes open and
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR KEY AT THE CAR.
These scumbags obviously were scoping me out as I was suiting up.
I suspect they're surfing slimeballs because they didn't take my golf clubs
worth well over $1000 and seemed to want mostly surf gear and other valuables.
Contact SurfinRick@aol.com if you find any of the above. Thanks.
